For three weeks in January of 1945, the Allied forces contested the last resistance of the German forces west of the Rhine in this area. Winter conditions were terrible and fighting was often without significant cover. It ended with the Germans being driven out of Alsace at the cost of over twenty thousand casualties on each side.
